When it comes to assessing the financial performance of the best movies, it’s not about what a movie makes at the box office. The real story is told when production budgets, P&A, talent participations and other costs collide with gross box office and ancillary income from VOD to DVD and TV. To get closer to this mysterious end of the equation, Deadline repeats our most valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2019, using data gathered from seasoned and trusted sources.
Universal / Blumhouse
Writer-director M. Night Shyamalan had surprise success with To divide, the 2016 thriller honored by James McAvoy as a psychopath with 23 personalities and an ending that invoked the filmmaker’s 2000 thriller Unbreakable. So, Shyamalan brought back the stars of that latest movie – Bruce Willis as superhero and Samuel L. Jackson as supervillain – and paired them up with McAvoy. The mashup did not exceed Split $ 40 million of domestic startup over three days or the gross $ 278.4 million of this movie. A glass fell below industry bullish projections north of $ 57 million over the four-day MLK weekend and made $ 40 million over three days and ultimately $ 247 million WW. Pic had fewer female and Hispanic viewers than the previous chapter, with audiences less impressed (B Cinemascore), not to mention critics who declined. A glass at 37% on Rotten Tomatoes against To divide72% rating fee.
THE SCORE OF THE BOX
Here are the costs and revenues as seen by our experts:
THE LOWER LINE
We hear that Jackson and Willis were given more of a head start than a typical Blumhouse production, which normally sees most of the back-end going to talent. But there was still a big distributed back-end, with stakes of $ 50 million (compared to To divideis $ 80 million). Disney Distributed Overseas After Treating Shyamalan’s Unbreakable, but Universal and Disney share the global revenues. Although A glass did not exceed expectations, the film generated a net profit of $ 68 million. This is the same amount that our funding sources have estimated for To divide, although A glass was more expensive than To divide in production costs, $ 20 million compared to $ 9 million net.
