Glass manufacturer Specialist Glass Products (SGP) will feature in an upcoming episode of Channel 4’s Grand Designs after bending large glass units for a home renovation featured on the show.
Despite the episode airing at the end of this month, filming took place at the company’s Milnsbridge factory in September 2020, in which the film crew documented the large-scale glass bending process.
The glass was used for the renovation of a property in Hales Barnes, Cheshire, which the episode focuses on.
The high performance glass was provided free of charge by the client and needed to be bent to meet the design requirements of the project.
SGP’s vast and innovative plant and machinery enables the company to bend glass up to 3200mm x 5000mm and is one of the only manufacturers in the country able to do so.
The client chose to use glass because they wanted a material that would keep heat in and out when needed.
While the crew encountered technical difficulties during filming due to unprecedented flaws in the supplied glass, the result was a success and even received praise from the show’s host, Kevin McCloud, who highlighted how fantastic the glass was and what a key design element. it was.
No stranger to TV appearances, SGP once featured on an episode of Channel 4’s Remarkable Renovations last year.
In the episode, the factory was visited by host George Clarke who learned about the glass tempering process from general manager Andrew Taylor.
The next TV appearance adds to an already successful year for the Huddersfield manufacturer, winning business of the year at the Examiner Business Awards in March and supplying the glass signage used around London for the line Recently opened Elizabeth.
Speaking of the Grand Designs feature film, Mr. Taylor: “Having the film crew visit was an amazing experience, and we can’t wait to see how our products are used in the next installment.
“As a manufacturing company, it’s fantastic to showcase the kinds of products we create here at the factory every day and to showcase what we are capable of with our machinery, experience and innovation.”
The episode will air on Channel 4 on Wednesday August 31 at 9 p.m.
