ST. PETERSBURG – The founder of a cosmetics line sold on HSN is the new owner of Glass House, arguably Tampa Bay’s most striking condo.
Dimitri Bakakos, also known as Dimitri James, paid $ 2.55 million this month for the fully furnished three-level penthouse at Signature Place in downtown St. Petersburg, the listing agent Becky McConnell. This is a record price for a condo in the building, which was completed during the real estate crash and subsequently plagued by costly design and construction flaws.
âIt’s all been fixed now, and it’s a popular building,â McConnell said.
The Glass House, which runs from the 34th to 36th floors of Signature Place, takes its name from a massive renovation several years ago that removed all walls except one on the unit’s first floor to maximize space and the floor-to-ceiling views of the city and the bay. The current owner paid it $ 1.835 million four years ago and originally listed it for $ 3.5 million.
Bakakos founded Skinn Cosmetics, a line of makeup and skin care products featured on St. Petersburg-based HSN, now a subsidiary of QVC. âReal beauty starts with the skin,â says Bakakos in an eye-catching video touting his products.
Bakakos is no stranger to eye-catching home design. According to a 2016 article in Palm Springs Style, a magazine focused on this California desert town, he and interior designer Pjetur Sigurdson shared a mid-century home with a yellow and blue color scheme throughout. Unusual touches included hand-carved teak chairs in the shape of hands; a garage lined with the same Martinique wallpaper as in the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel; and vintage finds from around the world. The ceiling of one room was covered with paper flowers used at the couple’s wedding.
With the sale of the Glass House, only two condos valued at over $ 2 million are currently on the market in downtown St. Petersburg. Mindy Grossman, the former head of HSN who now runs WW International, listed her Beach Drive condo last fall for $ 3.95 million, but pulled it out in January after failing to sell for the price reduced by $ 3.65 million.
